Leche Pascual to establish $30m yogurt plant in Philippines
Spanish yogurt company Leche Pascual is planning to set up a $30m manufacturing plant in Philippines, in the first quarter of 2014.
The facility, which will be built in one of the country's special economic zones, is expected to employ 200 people.
While the facility will carry out yogurt production, the cream base used in the production would be imported from Australia and New Zealand as dairy industry in Philippines would not be able to meet the demand.
The company plans to use the facility as a base to expand into other countries grouped under the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN). The ASEAN countries include Brunei, Philippines, Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia. Myanmar, Singapore, Thailand and Vietnam, reported abs-cbnnews.com.
Philippines Trade Undersecretary for investment promotion Cristino Panlilio said that Leche Pascual is one of the pioneers in canned yogurt.
"With the health benefits of yogurt, it should not be a luxury, but an easy accessible food," Panlilio added.
